Dr. Marco Tavanti co-founder and serves as board president of World Engagement Institute (WEI). He is a tenured Associate Professor for International Public Service DePaul University Graduate School of Public Service in Chicago. With more than 25 years of international experience working in Europe, East-Africa, Latin America and South-East Asia, Dr. Tavanti integrates his scholarship with practical knowledge of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), international development and poverty reduction. His international background includes the participation in humanitarian relief operations during the 1993 Bosnia-Herzegovina conflict in collaboration with various European and international NGOs. In 1996-1997 he worked in post-conflict reconstruction projects for land rights in Mozambique through partnerships between academia, religious institutions and NGOs. Since the 1997 Acteal massacre in Chiapas, Mexico, Dr. Tavanti has been instrumental for establishing collaborations and dialogue among conflicting parties through the involvement of state government leaders, academic institutions like the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Universidad Autónoma de Chiapas (UNACH) and NGOs like International Service for Peace (SIPAZ) and the Human Rights Center Fray Bartolome de Las Casas (FrayBa).
His international development expertise draws from several projects centered on good governance, social capital development and community social entrepreneurships in countries like the Philippines, Brazil, Mexico, Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique and Jordan. Since 2005, Dr. Tavanti has promoted community sustainable development among displaced informal settlers in Metro Manila, Philippines in collaboration with DePaul University, Adamson University and the Vincentian Center for Social Responsibility (VCSR). In partnership with the International Human Rights Law Institute (IHRLI) and the Jordanian Alliance Against Hunger (JAAH), Dr. Tavanti designed and co-directed the Intercultural Refugee Service Management Program involving US refugee resettlement volunteer agencies (VOLAGs) and the Jordan Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). His professional skills include participatory monitoring and evaluation, impact assessment of human rights and sustainable development programs, partnership management for poverty reduction, value-based leadership and community development. Both as scholar and practitioner, he is invested in international project management and organizational capacity building. His expertise in intercultural, international and inter-sector partnership reflects the partnership model of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) for the promotion of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
